The HFC HG-302 is HFCs version of the Tokyo Marui MK23 SOCOM non-blowback gas pistol. This is based on the large framed Heckler and Koch MK23 “offensive pistol” chambered in .45 ACP, developed for US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in the 1990s and still held in the arsenal of the US Navy Seals today. The premise was to have a pistol, suppressor and lumination and targeting package that could act in place of a primary weapon system where an operation required it’s capabilities, without the sacrifice in power and reliability that dropping to a traditional side arm might impose. The pistol was eventually phased out by the HK45, but is still in use. It is a large pistol, comparative to a Desert Eagle in terms of heft, but more ergonomicaly freindly. 

In Airsoft, the non-blowback MK23 pistols have been favoured by snipers, thanks to their long barrel (even without the suppressor), large frame holding a large magazine with a bigger gas and ammo capacity than other pistols and most of all for its quiet operation. The lack of a reciprocating slide means far less noise when fired. Being made by HFC and not in Japan, the power is more suited to UK airsoft sites, and unlike the Marui version, this suppressor actually extends the inner barrel to boost the FPS by about 20% and give the pistol a bit more range. The slide is however still functional and can be used to both cock the hammer back and expose the loading mechanism for maintenance or in the event of a jam. Because all of the energy required by the gas is to fire the BB and not re-cock the action, it is an excellent choice for accuracy, gas efficiency and use in the colder months.

It is actually quite fitting that this pistol be replicated as a non blowback pistol in airsoft, as the first developmental prototype of the real firearm came equipped with a slide lock function, stopping the slide from moving when fired to minimise noise and unwanted attention behind enemy lines. So if the non-blowback thing doesn’t scratch your realism itch, know that there was a version of the actual HK MK23 SOCOM pistol that had this as a real feature.
